San Antonio, TX, Councilmember Elisa Chan. Chan was recently recorded in a staff meeting exclaiming that she thinks lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are, “So disgusting!” Since having her prejudice exposed, Chan has hidden behind big talk about “religious freedom” and 1st Amendment rights — both of which she’s using to gain the status of “martyr” among her right-leaning, Tea Party constituents.

The freedom to spout homophobic remarks is one thing, but being a homophobic public servant charged with creating policies that directly affect LGBT people is a whole other story.
Will you join us in denouncing Councilmember Chan’s bigoted comments about LGBT people?
As progressive Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (some of us Christian, just like Chan), we cannot let the world believe that Elisa Chan represents us, our families, or our communities. Her statement about LGBT people is a far cry from the values we hold: inclusion, acceptance, and equity. We must refuse to be painted with the same brush, and reject all bigotry and prejudice within Asian America — starting with Councilmember Chan.
